What is the best cleaner, wax for 2 part polyurethane paint like Awlgrip or Imron?
Andrew Harper asked:
What is the best wax or cleaner for fiberglass hulls with two-part polyurethane type paints?
Answer:
Hi Andrew,
The best cleaner that is safe for two part polyurethane paint is Boat Clean Plus.
A very popular polish / UV Protector for two part polyurethane paint is Kwik Shine. It’s a spray and wipe product that is easy to use, provides good UV Protection and can last up to 1 year, plus it also has cleaning properties so it will remove light oxidation to brighten up your paint.
Another good alternative, especially if you use your boat in salt water, is Blue Water Hull Polish. It’s easy to apply; wipe on wipe off. No buffing is required. It provides good UV protection and it’s synthetic so it’s safe for two part polyurethane paint. The special property of Blue Water Hull Polish is that salt does not stick to it.
As you know salt is very corrosive and will etch your paint and polish. It’s not always convenient or possible to wash your boat every time you use it and if you try to rinse the salt off with a hose, the salt spots reappear and continue to eat away at your paint and cause pitting damage. If your hull is protected with Blue Water Hull Polish, you can now rinse it with a fresh water hose and the salt just falls off. No washing and no salt damage. It’s also more durable and will last longer.
You can use Kwik Shine as a cleaner and then overcoat it with Blue Water Hull Polish for added protection in salt water environments.
Thanks for your question,
