How to restore faded vinyl trim

  Skipper

Linda Truett asked:

The vinyl decorative trim has already suffered sun damage. Is there anything I can use on it to restore the color, short of having it replaced?

Answer:

For your convenience, I’ve highlighted the hyperlinks. Click on the hyperlink to get more information about the selected product.

It all depends on how extensive the fading is. If all the color has been completely bleached out by the sun, then you will have to replace it, but vinyl is pretty tough stuff. Usually by the time all the color is gone the vinyl is also cracking and lifting. Since you don’t mention the latter two conditions I assume that the damage is superficial and attempting to restore it is worthwhile.

Try Kwik Shine to restore the vinyl. Use a soft cotton cloth such as an old T shirt. Spray the Kwik Shine onto the cloth and rub away at the vinyl until the color is restored and it shines. Kwik Shine will remove light oxidation and surface pollutants that can cause dullness and it will enhance any color that’s remaining in the vinyl. Kwik Shine has excellent UV inhibitors and light stabilizers. Regular use will keep your vinyl trim looking new. You can also spray it onto other hard surfaces on your boat to bring up the color, shine and depth of image.
