How Can I Remove White Scale from my Outdrive?
Roy Whitley asked:
What product do you have that will remove the chalk looking buildup on an outdrive? I have a Merc 5.0 MPI with a Bravo III outdrive. On the upper 1/3 of the outdrive, there is a chalky looking substance.

The white chalk is caused from the build up of calcium and magnesium present in the water. Spray it with Algex. Let it work for about ½ hour, keeping it wet, brush it with a scrub brush and rinse it clean.
If the paint is pitted or flaking, sand down the damaged areas and refinish the outdrive with “Mercury Quicksilver Phontom Black Enamel Spray Paint”.
After it’s clean and dry, apply VS721 Bottom Coat. That will help to reduce the accumulation of the hard water residue and make it much easier to clean. During the season a periodic wipe down with a sponge should keep it clean and shiny.
